GUINEVERE WINDOWS GET GRAFFITI TREATMENT
No, Banksy hasn’t been given free reign in Guinevere’s windows.
But one of London’s favourite antiques shop has pushed the envelope of creativity with a striking new set of windows that feature ornate graffiti against which the shop’s furniture and accessories are displayed.
Artist Steve Cook was asked to put his painting skills to good use and create some vibrant graffiti ‘wallpaper’ that would stop traffic on the King’s Road.
“We wanted to do something that was unexpected,” say Kevin and Marc Weaver, owners of Guinevere. “We also thought we needed something that was going against the ‘traditional’ perception of antiques dealers. When Robert Hunter, Guinevere’s in-house stylist, came up with the idea, we went with it. And people are telling us that it’s quite edgy.”
These windows perfectly illustrate Guinevere’s philosophy of showcasing antiques in unique ways, in this case against a contemporary backdrop. It also proves Guinevere’s long-held belief that different eras – whether of furniture or art – can fit together harmoniously.
When Cook was doing the painting, he was amazed to see the reaction from the people in the neighbourhood.
“Everybody stopped to take a look and ask questions. I spoke to smart Fulham ladies, older gentlemen with their dogs, as well as some young hooded teenagers who offered their help,” he says.
